Two Become One

In 2021 we were gifted the full project to redesign the interior for Mother India’s The Wee Curry Shop. This entailed a comprehensive refresh of the existing restaurant whilst retaining the kitchen area and it’s fittings, knocking through to the shop next door, where we turned what was a drab office space into what you see below. Everything from paint colours, light fittings, bespoke wallpapers, cladding and the unique panelled feature wall were specified and designed by Scratch.

The brief for this project was to make it attract a young crowd, have an industrial yet comfy look, retain as much of the original features of the shop as possible and to stand out. Immediately this excited me, bursting with ideas I set about coming up with an exciting scheme for the restaurant.

From the bar front clad in Iroko strips mounted on a dark grey plywood with dumb waiter, the stripped back wall to reveal the original brick work, the feature wall clad with mouldings that bend at 90 degrees round and into the corners to the specially printed wall papers. Lighting is so important in a space. Large industrial lights fill the area with a golden hue enhanced by the wall lights and mustard coloured ceiling. On another wall the client was keen to have a wallpaper that had some significance to Glasgow, therefore I commissioned a wallpaper that has a stylized map of Glasgow with a mustard dot placed where The Wee Curry Shop stands. (talking point - spot where you live)

I felt it important to make the toilets here stand out. Clad with reclaimed flooring showing the underside and a tiled area for where it might get wet.

I could talk on and on about this project, but I won’t bore you anymore. If you have any questions feel free to get in touch.

“Fergus was brilliant to work with. We have known Fergus for some time now and used him on several projects, not only in our restaurants but at the family home too. He manages to understand what we are looking for and always comes up with great ideas. I asked if he would design the interior for Wee Curry Shop, it is very close to my heart as it is my first restaurant I opened in 1997. I knew it was in good hands and he would create a fabulous interior. I wasn’t wrong.”
